The Coalition for the Future of College Athletics Releases Statement Following Court Ruling

The preliminary injunction was granted in the Eastern District of Tennessee and applies nationally

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 29, 2024) – The Coalition for the Future of College Athletics released the below statement today following last week’s ruling in the Eastern District of Tennessee granting a preliminary injunction prohibiting the NCAA from enforcement of name, image, and likeness rules against any school in the nation.

“The ruling from Judge Corker in the Eastern District of Tennessee makes one thing clear: Congress can no longer wait to address issues in college athletics surrounding name, image, and likeness (NIL). It is now undeniable that regulating even basic aspects of NIL moving forward requires federal legislation. From a patchwork of state legislation to court rulings like the one last week, the absence of national standards for name, image, and likeness activity will increase and become more problematic unless Congress can adopt a federal solution.

We are encouraged by the momentum on Capitol Hill in both chambers, but now is the time to capitalize on that momentum and get bipartisan, bicameral federal legislation across the finish line. We look forward to our continued work with members of Congress in the coming weeks to find a bipartisan solution in the 118th Congress.”
